2010 Summer Research Internship Program

Program Purpose

The summer internship program at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is designed to give interns professional experience in the areas of research and cardiovascular health care.

Eligibility

MHIF is seeking diverse pool of interns based on a combination of demonstrated academic performance, leadership and career aspirations in the field of cardiology and/or research. Internships are full-time, paid and last 10-12 weeks.

In order to be successful, we strongly recommend that applicants for the 2010 program meet the following criteria:

  1. Enrolled in an accredited degree program in a health care or related discipline.
  2. Intend to graduate by the end of the 2010-2011 academic year.
  3. Have a GPA of 3.50 or above, as verified by a transcript.
  4. Available to attend three days of orientation from Tuesday, June 1, through Thursday, June 3.
  5. Available to work a minimum of 400 hours (up to 40 hours/week) from June 7 to August 20.

In compliance with federal law, upon hire, interns will be required to produce original documents verifying their identity and authorization to work in the United States.

Upon acceptance of an internship offer, interns will be required to submit documentation to verify that they have met the immunization requirements established by Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

Application Deadline

All of the requested information must be submitted by February 7th to be considered for the summer 2010 program.

Compensation/Benefits

Interns will receive a stipend of $8.00 per hour and paid parking.

Intern Responsibilities

The research intern is integrated into a research program area and assigned to work on a clinical research project. Interns will report to a designated supervisor and will maintain ongoing communication with this staff member through scheduled bi-weekly meetings. Interns must represent MHIF in a professional manner, maintain patient confidentiality, and accomplish duties with pride and enthusiasm. MHIF welcomes and encourages input from interns and will provide a broad base of experiences from which to learn.

Lead Intern Position

One returning intern from the 2009 cohort will be selected to provide program leadership. The lead intern will serve as a communication link between MHIF staff and the interns, and s/he will provide informal advice and mentorship to new interns. The lead intern will be paid the hourly intern stipend plus an additional $2.00 per hour. Interested lead candidates should follow the directions sent to them via email.

 

Requesting a Reference Letter

Each intern applicant must submit one letter of reference from one of the following:

  • A pre-medical adviser
  • A science professor
  • A supervisor from a clinical or research experience

Keep in mind that a substantive letter of reference has these important features:

  • The author knows the specific candidate well enough to evaluate his/her relevant qualifications.
  • The writer provides not only his overall assessment of the applicant, but enough supporting detail to support his conclusion.

Internship Program Application Process

Deadline

  • All of the requested information must be submitted by February 7th to be considered for the summer 2010 program.
  • You are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete (i.e., following up with your reference until s/he confirms that the reference has been submitted). Incomplete applications or those received after the deadline will not be considered.

Instructions

Please follow these instructions carefully. Consider this a part of the selection process.

  1. Use the 2010 Essay Template to draft essay answers that fit within the specified character limits.
  2. Preview the entire application to ensure that you have all the information you'll need.
  3. When you are ready, complete the Internship Application in Zoomerang. You will NOT be able to save your answers and then complete the application at a later time. (The application is no longer available, because the application deadline has passed.)
  4. Share the Provide a Reference information with the person who will provide your reference.
  5. PDF your resume and transcript (in one file, in that order) and save it with your last name, first name (i.e., Fey, Tina.pdf or Stewart, Jon.pdf). A one-page resume is preferred (do NOT exceed two pages). Email that PDF to ResearchIntern@mhif.org
  6. When we have received the FOUR required application components, we will send you an email confirming that you will be considered for the 2010 program. This is a manual process, so do not expect an instantaneous response.
