2009 VIVA Satellite Symposium: Carotid 'In-Depth'

2009 VIVA Satellite Symposium: Carotid ‘In-Depth'

Tuesday, October 20, 2009, Las Vegas, NV

Physicians treating patients with carotid artery disease face complex treatment decisions. The status of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) as the “gold standard of treatment” is being challenged by recent randomized clinical trials comparing CEA with less-invasive carotid artery stenting (CAS). This symposium will advance attendees’ understanding of the risks, benefits and current indications related to medical management, endovascular repair and open surgical repair.

After attending this symposium, participants will be better able to:
1.   Define the role of pre-procedure carotid imaging in clinical practice.
2.   Explain the medical options for treating patients with carotid disease.
3.   Categorize high- and low-risk status in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or carotid artery stenting (CAS).
4.   Implement strategies for performing CAS in patients with unfavorable anatomy.
5.   Utilize data on stent type when performing CAS.
