Internship Program

Overview
The internship program at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is designed to give the student a professional experience in his/her major area.  This internship will be directed in cooperation with the college or university internship coordinator. Internship opportunities are full-time and are available during the winter/spring (January-May), summer (May-August) and fall (September-December).  Winter/spring and fall internships are typically 15 weeks and summer internships 12 weeks. The term of the internship can be modified to satisfy university requirements or increase credit value.

Eligibility
Eligible students will be final semester/quarter undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited health-related degree program with a significant interest in and dedication to primary prevention.  Specific disciplines may include, but are not limited to, public health, health education, exercise science,  nutrition and behavioral psychology.  Non-sponsored (non-credit) students from any of the above-defined disciplines will also be considered.

Application/Selection Process
Any interested student/prospective intern should complete an online Internship Application and attach a Letter of Interest and an updated resume as directed.

All required application materials must be received on or before the defined application deadline dates.  These dates have been established as follows:

                  Spring .................... October 1
                  Summer ....................March 15
                  Fall ........................... June 1

Upon receipt of the above, a program representative will contact you to review your materials/credentials and, if appropriate, arrange a personal interview.  Interviews will be conducted to select the most qualified and suitable candidate(s) and will be performed in-person or by phone depending on the availability of the student.  Selection will be made based on the students’ background and experiences, communication skills, professional interests and enthusiasm, and on the projected needs and scheduled activities of the organization/division during the defined internship period.

Responsibilities
The student intern is integrated into a variety of program areas depending on his/her background, interests and university requirements.  Following an initial structured orientation/training, all student interns are required to submit formal goals and objectives for approval by both the university and site supervisors.  Also, as part of these responsibilities, the student must identify and complete one major project.

The student intern will report to the Director of Education and will maintain ongoing communication with this staff member through scheduled weekly meetings.  The intern is expected to work up to 40 hours per week; hours may vary.  As part of the planned experience, students are given direct programming responsibilities to include budgeting, public relations/promotions, registration, program evaluation, staff training and other duties.  Specific examples of student internship responsibilities have been detailed on the Summ
