Internship Program
Overview
The summer internship program at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is designed to give students a professional experience in the areas of research and cardiovascular health care.
Eligibility
Undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited health-related degree program with a significant interest in cardiology and/or research are eligible for the internship program. Specific disciplines may include, but are not limited to, premed, nursing, physics, biomedical engineering, exercise science or cardiac rehabilitation.
Students who have secured funding from other sources, such as the American Heart Association or other financial awards (e.g., through their educational institution) will be given priority.
MHIF also has designated funding for three minority students whose residence is in Minneapolis or St. Paul. These positions have been funded by Piper Jaffray.
NOTE: If you are a student who has secured funding, or if you are applying for one of the three internship opportunities for minority students, please disclose this information in your letter of interest.
Application/Selection Process
Any interested student/prospective intern should complete an Internship Application and attach an updated resume and letter of interest as directed. (NOTE: attachments need to be made before the application form will come up.)
We are in the selection process for the 2008 summer internship and are no longer receiving applications. Please check back in 2009!
Upon receipt of the above, a program representative will contact you. Selection will be made based on the student's background and experiences, communication skills, professional interests and enthusiasm, and on the projected needs and scheduled activities of the organization/division during the defined internship period.
Responsibilities
The student intern is integrated into a research program area depending on his/her background and interests. Student interns are required to submit formal goals and objectives for approval by supervisors. As part of these responsibilities, the student must identify and complete one major project.
The student intern will report to their supervisor and will maintain ongoing communication with this staff member through scheduled weekly meetings. The intern is expected to work 40 hours per week, unless part-time hours have been requested and approved.
Once a student has accepted and begins his/her summer internship, they are obligated to complete the requirements of the program as outlined by MHIF. The intern must represent MHIF in a professional manner, maintain patient confidentiality, and accomplish duties with pride and enthusiasm. MHIF welcomes and encourages input from the student and will provide a broad base of experiences from which to learn.
The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation reserves the right to terminate an internship should action be deemed necessary.
Compensation/Benefits
Students will receive a stipend in the amount of $8.00/hour. MHIF also provides reimbursement for expenses related to any authorized travel.Parking will be made available at no cost to the student.
