Internship Program Overview
The summer internship program at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is designed to give interns professional experience in the areas of research and cardiovascular health care.
Eligibility
MHIF is seeking a diverse pool of interns based on a combination of demonstrated academic performance, leadership and career aspirations in the field of cardiology and/or research. Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Internships are open to undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited degree program in health care disciplines such as premed, nursing, physics, biomedical engineering, exercise science, cardiac rehabilitation or other related disciplines. Post-baccalaureate premed applicants, or those in related fields, will also be considered.
- Internships are full-time and last 10-12 weeks in duration. We hope to have all interns present for orientation during the week of June 1-5, 2009.
- In compliance with federal law, upon hire, interns will be required to produce original documents verifying their identity and authorization to work in the United States.
- Upon acceptance of an internship offer, interns will be required to submit documentation to verify that they have met the immunization requirements established by Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
Compensation/Benefits
Interns will receive a stipend of $8.00 per hour and paid parking. We are sometimes able to host additional interns who are able to secure funding or grants to cover their internship (e.g., through their university, the American Heart Association research scholarships or other sources).
Intern Responsibilities
The research intern is integrated into a research program area depending on his/her background and interests. Interns are required to submit formal goals and objectives for approval by supervisors. As part of these responsibilities, interns must identify and complete one major project.
Interns will report to a designated supervisor and will maintain ongoing communication with this staff member through scheduled weekly meetings. The intern is expected to work 40 hours per week, unless part-time hours have been requested and approved.
Once interns have accepted and begins their summer internships, they are expected to complete the requirements of the program as outlined by MHIF. Interns must represent MHIF in a professional manner, maintain patient confidentiality, and accomplish duties with pride and enthusiasm. MHIF welcomes and encourages input from interns and will provide a broad base of experiences from which to learn. MHIF reserves the right to terminate an internship should that action be deemed necessary.
Lead Intern Position
One returning intern will be selected to provide program leadership. The lead intern will serve as a communication link between MHIF staff and the interns, and s/he will provide informal advice and mentorship to new interns. To be considered, returning intern applicants will be asked to outline in their motivation statement what they would contribute to the program as a lead intern. The lead intern will be paid the hourly intern stipend plus an additional $2.00 per hour.
