Women and Heart Disease: A Summit to Eliminate Untimely Deaths in Women

Cardiac care providers; primary care, emergency medicine, and women’s health providers; stake-holders in the design and delivery of women’s heart health; and interested others

Summit Overview

The program begins with a description of the impetus for the Summit and the introduction of the collaborating partners. A keynote address will provide an overview synopsis of milestones to date, culminating in the call to action to find the next bold actions needed to end untimely deaths of women from heart disease.

From the literature and advice from experts in the area, four focus areas have been identified to help to chart the “next frontiers” in the quest. After a brief introduction by the moderators, the current status of each focus area will be succinctly reviewed and outstanding problems in each area will be identified. Selected panel members will be asked to help push forward solutions to the problems and dilemmas yet faced in the area. A time-limited, focused [recorded] dialogue with the audience will follow for each focus area.

Further comments will be received by the “focus area chairs” after the program for discussion which will lead to the writing of the papers and work plan the following day.

Summit Focus Areas

1. National community initiatives: Community awareness and prevention, including screening
2. Symptom recognition and delays in seeking treatment: Clinical, physiological and social factors
3. Closing the survival gap: Sex differences and disparities in biology, pathophysiology, treatment, receiving care and outcomes
4. Patient-provider connection: Challenges for women living with heart disease, including secondary prevention and ongoing disease management

Summit Objectives

• Acknowledge progress made in increasing awareness, treatment, and primary and secondary prevention to reduce morbidity and mortality of heart disease in women.
• Highlight known and potential sex differences in symptoms, treatment and outcomes.
• Identify delivery strategies to remove barriers to and increase appropriateness and speed in receipt of cardiovascular care for women.
• Determine the next efforts to raise community awareness and increase primary prevention efforts to reduce the burden of heart disease in women.
• Respond to healthcare and insurance reform in light of Minnesota’s unique and lower cost delivery of care.

Accreditation for the Thursday CME Program

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Allina Hospitals & Clinics and Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation. Allina Hospitals & Clinics is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Center for Learning & Innovation, Office of Accreditation at Allina Hospitals & Clinics designates this educational activity for a maximum of 8.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits^TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Continuing medical education credits are accepted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC) for certification renewal, if the content is applicable to the area of certification. Continuing education hours approved by the ACCME meet the ANCC-accredited continuing nursing education (CNE) criteria.

Individuals representing other professional disciplines may submit summit materials to their respective professional associations for 8.0 hours of continuing education credit.

Tuition

$150 for all attendees at the Day 1 CME Program on Thursday, April 29, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
FREE Optional Attendance at the Day 2 Think-Tank on Friday, April 30, from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Conference organizers ask that you pre-register to participate in the think-tank, so that we can plan for meeting space and catering needs for the working sessions.

Tuition includes summit materials, breakfast, lunch and refreshments. Advanced registrations are required and will be accepted until Thursday, April 22. To ensure a comfortable environment, attendance may be capped; early registration is recommended.
