POSITION TITLE: Marketing & Communications Specialist (Full-Time/External Relations Division)

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Marketing & Communications Specialist is a new position at MHIF. The person in this role will produce a unified communications effort that projects the MHIF brand and core purpose, while fulfilling the needs of Research, Education and External Relations. With that central purpose in mind, responsibilities include: providing leadership for the Foundation on strategic use of all communications, including print, web and social media; creating, tailoring and sourcing the written, visual and audio content of the Foundation’s website; managing and leading an ongoing electronic fundraising campaign, providing a vision and voice for all Foundation communications; crafting editorial and technical policies for all marketing and communications; leading all print, web and social media initiatives; fostering collaboration and ownership among those who contribute to all MHIF communications.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Support the development and execution of marketing, public relations and communications plans.

·Write feature and editorial articles along with a range of business communications for print and electronic publications.

·Support the planning and production of marketing-communications from concept to distribution for all teams within the Foundation.

·Lead the strategy for key MHIF publications (print and e-communications) such as the Monday Morning email, MHIF newsletter, annual report, etc., working collaboratively across teams to develop.

·Identify opportunities to implement standardized approaches and work with Education, External Relations and Research departments to implement them Foundation-wide.

·Ensure the MHIF brand and graphic identity are maintained along with quality standards, apply corporate standards to different mediums, including print, web, social media, etc.

·Build an MHIF web-based online giving program that will aggressively increase fundraising support for External Relations and its strategic initiatives. All e-communications should be incorporated into one robust online donor experience.

·Keep appropriately current with cardiovascular research and education activities taking place at the Minneapolis Heart Institute and the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.

·Create a web experience where the user can see at a glance the Foundation’s dedication to research and education and feel compelled to support that effort.

·Develop, implement and manage marketing and communications content policy, procedures and standards.

·Apply and keep current on all search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.

·Mange website to ensure usability, functionality and relevance.

·Evaluate all communications strategies utilized, including web site analytics and share appropriately.

·Respectively educate MHIF staff on the benefits of e-communications, including web and social media.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/CHARACTERISTICS:

Bachelor’s degree required. Journalism, English, Communications / Marketing degree preferred. 

A minimum of three (3) years marketing and communications experience. 

Experience in a research and education foundation tied to a large health care system with a comprehensive development program.   Non-profit experience a must. 

A problem solver and forward thinker, this person will take a positive approach to making things happen and will motivate others to take action. This person knows how to get things done. 

Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine and mature style. 

Proficiency and experience with HTML, electronic newsletter tools, databases and fundraising software. 

Strong knowledge of website usability, online marketing and site analysis. 

Extraordinary interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with online donors and MHIF colleagues. 

Creative problem solving skills: the ability to apply sound judgment and innovative ideas to meet presented challenges. 

Strategic and forward thinker with an understanding of the fast evolving field of nonprofit communications and fundraising. 

Strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to deal with detailed projects. 

Flexible work attitude: the ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently. 

Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and diplomacy, and have an impeccable commitment to confidentiality, integrity and ethics. 

Ability to meet deadlines and keep a cool head under pressure.
