MHIF Community Partnerships

The Foundation continues to depend on its many established community partnerships as a vehicle for reaching and influencing at-risk audiences with a prevention message. The following represent current collaborative partnerships:
Be Active Minnesota
In 2001, the Foundation partnered with the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Council on Physical Activity and Sports in the development of a freestanding nonprofit organization, Be Active Minnesota, established to improve the wellbeing of Minnesotans through the support and promotion of physical activity recognizing that physical inactivity is a significant influence in the development of heart disease. For more information on Be Active Minnesota, go to www.beactiveminnesota.org.

Grant Programs (Active)
The Foundation through its Education Services Division, aggressively pursues grants to support new and existing heart health education initiatives. Current grant supported programs have been summarized as follows:
Heart of a Champion/General Mills Foundation
The Heart of a Champion pilot program is a collaborative partnership between the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, Team USA Minnesota, and area collegiate athletes. The Heart of a Champion program emphasizes positive behavior change through goal setting and decision-making, and will be delivered to 30 schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul during the 2003-2004 school year. Support for this program has been provided through a grant from the General Mills Foundation.

Smoking Cessation Resource Directory/ClearWay Minnesota SM
In 1993, the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) developed the statewide Smoking Cessation Resource Directory and has continued to update and manage this tool to assist individuals interested in quitting smoking and to aid health professionals in their smoking cessation counseling and referral activities. In 2003, the Foundation entered into a partnership with the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco to further enhance this valuable online resource through more frequent updates, improved online navigation tools and other site improvements. Women’s Walk/Run Training Clinic/Women’s Sports Foundation and Ryka
The Women’s Walk/Run Training Clinic (WTC) is a 10-week walk/run program designed specifically for women who want to become more physically active, and is compromised of both education and exercise training. The WTC will be held in three Minnesota locations during the summer of 2004 with grant support from the Women’s Sports Foundation and Ryka.
ReachOut for Heart Health Community Mini-grant Program
The Foundation recognizes that some of the most innovative and effective heart health education initiatives in the Twin Cities area are being coordinated through community-based organizations. In an effort to support and encourage involvement, we have developed a small, competitive grants program. This program, which was pilot tested in 2003, provides valuable support through funding and/or complimentary direct services to groups that have a successful history of reaching and serving defined at-risk audiences.
