Equity in Cardiovascular Health Outcomes—Facts, Figures, and MHI Strategies to Close the Gap

Dr. Mosi Bennett is a partner and senior consulting cardiologist specializing in heart failure and transplantation at the Minneapolis Heart Institute. He completed his cardiovascular medicine and advanced heart failure training at the Cleveland Clinic and his internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He received dual bachelor’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and earned his MD and PhD through the Medical Scientist Training Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bennett’s cardiovascular research interests include the role of endomyocardial biopsy in the diagnosis and management of heart failure, the effect of mechanical support on gene expression in the heart and the effectiveness of remote monitoring for heart failure patients.

He works closely with the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation as a mentor for the internship program and as an investigator on multicenter clinical trials and investigator-initiated projects. As a heart failure cardiologist, he is particularly interested in developing a robust heart failure research portfolio at the foundation to meet the needs of patients across the spectrum of this chronic disease. He is equally committed to addressing disparities in health care, including inequities in participation in clinical trials and access to world-class care.

Dr. Mario Goessl is director of transcatheter valve therapies at Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute, a role he has held since joining the organization in 2016. He previously served as director of the structural heart disease program at Dean Clinic in Madison, Wisconsin, and as a clinical adjunct assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He was also an assistant professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Goessl has authored or co-authored more than 100 published manuscripts and book chapters and is a frequent national and international speaker on valvular and coronary heart disease.

His special interests include structural heart interventions such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR), MitraClip procedures, transcatheter tricuspid valve repair, left atrial appendage closure (Watchman), atrial septal defect and patent foramen ovale closure, and other similar therapies.
