How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?
I first heard about the MHIF internship when shadowing a cardiologist in the summer following my first year of college. After learning about the unique research and learning opportunities the internship offers, I was excited to apply. I am so grateful to have been part of last year's summer intern cohort, and my love for the program made me want to return to MHIF this summer.
What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?
I initially became interested in cardiology in high school after one of my family members underwent a serious heart surgery. Although scary at the time, I found the details of the procedure to be fascinating. I was introduced to scientific research after joining a lab focusing on motor control and mobility during my second year at Michigan. When I found out MHIF offered an internship program for students to learn specifically about cardiovascular medicine and engage in heart-related clinical research, I was eager to participate.
What is your desired career in medicine?
After learning more about the clinical research MHIF conducts and observing several cardiologists there last summer, my current aspirations involve pursuing a career in internal medicine. I also developed a specific interest in preventative cardiology from working closely with my physician mentor last summer.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
Meeting the interns! Last summer our intern cohort became great friends, so I am excited to spend time with the new interns this summer. I am also looking forward to working with my physician and staff mentors!
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
From this experience, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of my new research topic this year, as well as grow my knowledge of cardiology through physician presentations and clinical observations.
What are your plans after the summer?
I will be returning to work at MHIF for my gap year while applying to medical school.
What is a fun fact about you?
I have never broken a bone.
