How did you hear about the MHIF internship and why did you want to participate?

One of my research mentors gave me a list of research programs he'd recommended, and I found the MHIF internship on there! I ultimately decided I want to participate in MHIF due to the opportunity to work closely with a physician mentor, so that I may continue seeing how research integrates into clinical practice.

What sparked your interest in the field of research, medicine and cardiology?

Growing up in a majority Black and middle-class town, social-linked health disparities were my unfortunate truth. I saw various cardiovascular conditions affecting many in my community; diseases like heart disease or hypertension were too normalized. This was deeply personal to me; I realized that the very people who looked like me were suffering the most, seemingly based on their zip code or identity. Armed with this perspective, I am inspired to contribute to the effort to solve population-wide health challenges. Clinical research, much like the work done at the MHIF gives me the opportunity to learn how to use cutting-edge tools and techniques to answer how the best health interventions may be applied in the most beneficial ways.

What is your desired career in medicine?

I am staying open to any and all specialties, but currently interested in internal medicine or women's health.

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

I am most looking forward to building meaningful connections. Whether it's with the others from my cohort, with research mentors, or with community members at the MHIF, I believe these relationships will be invaluable to my growth as a scientist.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I'm eager to immerse myself in medical science and to explore how research can lead to advancements in healthcare. Learning from experienced mentors is a crucial part of this journey; I want to absorb as much knowledge as possible from their expertise and insights. Their guidance will be invaluable in shaping my future approach to both clinical practice and research.

What are your plans after the summer?

I hope to continue my gap year applying to medical schools and working in Urgent Care as a scribe and physician facilitator.

What is a fun fact about you?

I'm a huge foodie and love trying new restaurants!
